Figure of a Youth
This striking figure, thought to be a depiction of Hermes, is a Roman work after a Classical Greek piece attributed to Polykleitos, the original being from the late 5th or early 4th century B.C. Carved from a fine white marble, the figure stands in a contrapposto pose, with his weight resting on his right leg, the left arm is draped with fabric.  Examples of this type include the Hermes Ludovisi, currently in the Pallazo Altemps, and the Roman Hermes which can be found in the Metropolitan museum
Provenance
Previously in the Steensen Family Collection, manor of Steensgard in Funen, Denmark, since the end of the 18th century.
