Description

The Lombard Kingdom was an early medieval state established by the Lombards, a Germanic people, on the Italian Peninsula in the latter part of the 6th century. The produced elaborate pieces of jewellery often incorporating stones, gems and cloisonne. One of the most famous hordes found is the Sutri treasures, now kept in the British Museum. With an elaborate design of four raised bosses decorated with roundels of beaded wire, triangular motifs also filled with similar small roundels between, with a raised inner band, spirals of beaded gold wire and other motifs around it, a raised oval cell inset with a garnet in the centre, with a spiral outer border, and a beaded band on the shallow, in-curving sides of the rim.
